Access Cochran County Court Records

For a Cochran County court record search, go straight to the clerk whose court handled the case. Cochran County keeps its trial court files with the clerk's office, not in a general county archive. A docket helps you spot the case and its filings, but pleadings, orders, and judgments often need a separate copy request. You can call the clerk, visit in person, send an approved written request, or use a limited statewide service. Format counts too. A plain electronic image is not the same thing as a certified court record. Redaction rules, confidentiality law, and sealing orders still apply, so a public index does not mean every filed document can be released.

Getting Cochran County Court Records

Know which office holds the record you want. Lisa Smith serves as both County Clerk and District Clerk. The County Clerk side holds constitutional county court papers. It also keeps probate, county civil, and county misdemeanor files. The District Clerk side keeps the 286th Judicial District Court materials. Those cover civil, criminal, family, juvenile, dockets, judgments, and orders. Justice Court handles countywide Class C cases, traffic, small civil matters, and evictions. Each municipal clerk, meanwhile, keeps that city's own cases.

Before you send a County or District Clerk request, call 806-266-5450. Ask whether the office takes requests at the Room 102 counter, by mail, email, or fax. Get the current search, copy, certification, and delivery fees too. A published email or fax line does not guarantee every record order goes through those channels. No official page confirms a public terminal either. So ask about access before you make the trip.

  1. Name the court, Cochran County, case type, and cause number.
  2. Request a docket, register, judgment, order, or other specific item.
  3. State whether a plain or certified copy is needed.
  4. Ask for the accepted request channel, current fee quote, and delivery choices.
  5. If access is limited, request the legal basis and ask whether a redacted or index-only copy is available.

One elected officer wears two hats. That does not blur the legal custody behind them. The County Clerk page and District Clerk page list the same Room 102 address, phone, fax, email, and hours. Even so, tell the staff which capacity holds your file. That one detail helps them route the docket search. It also lets them charge under the correct fee authority.

Court Record Types

A Cochran County case file can hold a lot. There may be an index, a running docket, pleadings, motions, service returns, notices, signed orders, judgments, and cost entries. A criminal docket file may add a charging instrument. It may also include a plea or disposition record. A civil file may hold a petition, an answer, motions, hearing notices, and a judgment. Probate, family, juvenile, mental-health, and protective-order files need special care. Access can change document by document.

A court reporter's transcript is not the clerk's docket copy. Exhibits may follow court or reporter procedures instead of the standard copy counter. Name the exact item you want. To learn what happened and when, ask for the docket sheet or register first. For proof of a ruling, name the signed order or final judgment. A portal printout stays uncertified no matter how official the system behind it looks.

Index
Basic metadata confirming that a case or filed item exists.
Docket or register
A dated sequence of filings, settings, orders, and dispositions.
Plain copy
A paper or electronic reproduction without the clerk's certification.
Certified copy
A copy carrying the clerk's certification and applicable seal or fee.

Cochran Request Details That Matter

A tight request saves search time. It also keeps you from collecting personal data you do not need. List your contact information. Add the court, cause number, filing year, case category, document name, format, certification choice, and delivery preference. Missing the cause number? Ask for a narrow index search built on a name and a date range. Staff cannot interpret the result or advise a legal step, so do not ask.

A solid request might read, "the public docket sheet and signed final judgment for the identified cause number." Add a willingness to pay up to a stated limit. Request notice before work starts if a search or retrieval charge applies. The county financial open-records route is not a court-file form. Its written-only, no-email rules cover its financial-information process, not case records automatically.

Use the court-file route: Send a judicial case-record request to the maintaining clerk. Do not substitute Cochran County's financial-information request letter.

Inside a Cochran County Court Record

Cochran County publishes no sample docket and no local public docket download. If a clerk supplies a lawful copy, or an integrated portal ever opens, check the fields listed below. Expect some records to show fewer fields, whether because the copy is an index, an older paper file, or a redacted public version.

Court and cause numberThe tribunal, county, and exact identifier.
Case category and filed dateThe kind of matter and date accepted by the clerk.
Judge and assignmentThe assigned judge and court when public.
Docket entryThe date and short description of an event or filing.
Document titleThe named pleading, motion, notice, order, or judgment.
Setting and dispositionPublic hearing details and recorded outcome, if entered.
Access notationWhether an item is public, paid, restricted, sealed, or not digitized.

A docket entry may summarize a filing without showing the document itself. An unsigned proposal is not the signed order. A reset does not decide the case. When the exact wording matters, request the filed document and ask whether certification is required.

Cochran Copy Formats Compared

Paper, electronic, and certified records each answer a different need. Availability varies with the office and the file's age. Ask whether an item can be emailed, placed on media, mailed, picked up, or viewed at a terminal. Cochran County promises none of these choices on its pages, so confirm first. Authentication is a separate service, and ordinary certification does not include it.

Fees and Certified Copies

Fees for copies start with the Cochran County Clerk schedule effective January 1, 2024. A plain copy runs $1 per page. Certification adds $5 per document, and the schedule also covers authentication and CD categories. The District Clerk PDF is far older, effective January 1, 2015. It shows a $5 record search per party plus $1-per-page copy items, so treat those prices as stale until the office quotes current ones.

District-clerk copies follow state guidance. That means a $5 certificate and seal charge for certified copies, per-page charges, and a different electronic rate once a job passes ten pages. The Justice Court table lists $2 for the first certified page. It adds 25 cents for each extra page, plus a $10 transcript item. None of these figures replaces a fresh quote from the Cochran County office that holds the docket.

Note: Ask for a written cost estimate when retrieval, certification, delivery, or a large page count may affect the total.

Cochran Records Access Boundaries

Texas court records sit outside the ordinary executive-branch rules. Government Code section 552.0035 draws that judiciary boundary. Case-file access rests on court rules, statutes, and common law. Rule 12 governs judicial administrative records within its scope. Rule 15 addresses remote access. Rule of Civil Procedure 76a starts from openness for court records. But it permits limits under law or a valid sealing order.

Several categories face added restrictions. Juvenile records fall under Family Code Chapter 58. Mental-health records are restricted by Health and Safety Code Chapter 571. Family, child-protection, protective-order, expunction, and nondisclosure files can be closed or redacted. A public index may show less than the clerk's full file. Ask the Cochran County clerk for the separable public portion instead of guessing at withheld content.

When access is denied: Ask for the rule, statute, or order relied upon and whether a redacted or index-only copy can be released. The Texas Judicial Branch policy explains the Rule 12 appeal path for administrative records within that rule.

Cochran Terminal Access Questions

In-person docket access centers on the Cochran County courthouse in Morton. The address is 100 North Main Street. Public terminals, printing, scanning, Wi-Fi, and any copy-order cutoff are not posted. So call 806-266-5450 first. The clerk's hours run Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 5 p.m. Friday hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

When you call, ask whether a terminal searches both county and district indexes. Ask whether images open, whether an account is required, and whether pages can print or save. Older paper files may need to be pulled ahead of a visit. Confirm that too. Before ordering copies, work through the Cochran County case lookup to pin down the custodian and cause number.

Cochran Transcripts Need Separate Routing

A transcript is not a docket copy you can order from the clerk. Ask the 286th District Court whether the court reporter or another office holds it. Also ask whether release is allowed. Exhibits may carry their own custody and access rules. Keep in mind that a certified docket sheet certifies entries. It does not certify the words spoken in court.
