Searching the Cochran County Court Docket
Cochran County offers no single website that searches every court docket at once. Start with whichever court is named on your notice, citation, or filing stamp. Felonies, divorces, land titles, and larger civil cases follow one track. They generally land in the 286th Judicial District Court. Probate and county misdemeanors start with the County Clerk. Class C cases, traffic tickets, small claims, and evictions are another story. They may sit with the countywide Justice Court or a municipal court instead.
Have the exact cause number ready, punctuation and suffix included. The filing year helps. The case category helps too. So does naming the document you want, like a docket sheet, judgment, order, or hearing notice. A name works when the number is unknown. Still, a narrow request gives the clerk a far better starting point.
- Read the court and issuing authority on the case paper.
- Choose the District Clerk, County Clerk, Justice Court, or city clerk.
- Ask for a search by cause number or a narrow name and year range.
- Request the docket sheet and ask whether the desired filing is public.
- Verify the current setting and copy charges with the maintaining office.
Route a Cochran County Court Record
Lisa Smith holds both clerk titles in Cochran County. She serves as County Clerk and District Clerk from Room 102. The roles still split legal custody of court records. District Court filings answer to the District Clerk side of the job. Probate and constitutional county court files answer to the County Clerk side. Justice and municipal dockets stay with their own offices.
- District Clerk
- 286th District civil, criminal, family, juvenile, judgments, orders, and docket material.
- County Clerk
- County court, probate, county civil, and county misdemeanor records.
- Justice Court
- Countywide Class C, traffic, small claims, eviction, and minor civil cases.
- Municipal clerk
- City ordinance and municipal Class C cases within city authority.
Inside a Cochran County Court Docket
A docket is a summary, never the whole case file. An entry may show only that something was filed or that a matter was set for a date, without the document itself attached. In Texas the word docket also means a hearing calendar, so it pays to ask which one the office is handing you, the case-event list or the schedule.
| Cause Number | The court-assigned identifier, kept with exact punctuation. |
|---|---|
| Case Style | The caption that identifies parties or governmental roles. |
| Filings | Dates and labels for pleadings, motions, notices, and orders. |
| Settings | Event date, court, location, type, status, and resets. |
| Disposition | The recorded resolution, read with the signed order when available. |
No Single Cochran County Docket Portal
The Texas Judicial Branch states plainly that no one portal covers all trial-court cases. That gap matters here. County pages publish contacts but no all-case docket search. re:SearchTX gathers records from integrated courts. Coverage for Cochran County varies. Access still turns on user role and document security.
The OCA Citations and Notices search takes a name, cause number, court or county, and status fields. It is not a full case index. No result does not mean no case exists; call the clerk. Older files may never have gone digital. Restricted records may not appear remotely at all.
For a statewide entry point covering citation, notice, and local-rule resources, the official OCA Topics page is the place to look.
Helpful as those tools are, none of them is a live Cochran County calendar or a complete local court docket.
Courts That Keep Dockets in Cochran County
Under Government Code Section 24.463, Cochran and Hockley Counties share the 286th Judicial District. Cochran County also runs a constitutional county court, one countywide Justice Court, and municipal routes. A district setting might be held in Morton or Levelland, so let the notice and the clerk settle where you actually appear.
| Court | Docket Covers | Contact |
|---|---|---|
| 286th District | Felony, family, land title, and larger civil | District Clerk |
| County Court | County misdemeanors, probate, and limited civil | County Clerk |
| Justice Court | Class C, traffic, small claims, and eviction | Room B-4 |
| Morton Municipal | City ordinance and municipal Class C | 201 E Wilson |
| Whiteface Municipal | Last listed in the 2023 official directory | Verify by phone |
The Shared 286th Cochran County Docket
The 286th Judicial District Court serves both Cochran and Hockley Counties. Current directory material lists Judge Anna D. Hord presiding. Its principal office sits in Levelland. Cochran's local court contact works out of Suite 205 in the Morton courthouse. Before any appearance, ask one question. Does it happen in Morton, in Levelland, or remotely?
The official District Court page provides the local court connection and its operating materials.
The page lists personnel and links, but the county posts no stable public docket search there.
How to Find Court Dates and Settings
Cochran County publishes no verified local calendar, calendar download, alert service, or API. The County Judge page carries a "County Court Dockets" heading. No link sits behind it. The District and Justice Court pages give contacts. They offer no searchable calendar. Commissioners Court meetings are not judicial settings, so skip them for case dates.
Call the office holding the case. Give the cause number. Ask for the date, time, court, room, event type, and status. For a 286th matter, confirm Morton or Levelland. Also ask whether a remote link exists. A reset or continuance is a scheduling change, not proof the case ended. The Cochran County court dates page breaks down these fields.
Cochran County Court Docket Activity
FY 2024 reports add context without naming cases. The Justice Court opened with 500 active pending matters, added 251, disposed of 252, and closed with 507. Criminal categories moved from 460 pending to 465.
District Court opened the year with 165 pending matters, added 67, disposed of 86, and closed at 139: 68 civil, 39 family, zero juvenile, and 32 criminal. These are activity categories. They are not people, and they are not outcomes.
Public Access to Court Dockets
Texas does not treat case files like ordinary executive records. Government Code Section 552.0035 draws the judiciary boundary. Rule 12 governs judicial administrative records, and Rule 15 covers remote access to case records. Confidentiality, sealing, and redaction rules apply throughout.
Key Texas rules:
Rule 12 provides a request and appeal process for covered administrative records.
Rule 15 supplies the remote court-case access framework.
Family Code Chapter 58 restricts juvenile records.
Government Code Section 552.0035 explains the judiciary boundary.
Restricted Cochran County Court Records
A public index never proves every document is open. Juvenile, child-protection, family, mental-health, expunction, nondisclosure, protective-order, and sealed material may be restricted or redacted. An item can also be missing simply because it is old or was never digitized.
Ask whether a public index, a docket sheet, or a redacted copy remains available. Request the legal basis for anything withheld. Ask whether a separable public part can be released. Never guess at what a sealed record says.

Cochran County Docket Copy Fees
Copy fees in Cochran County follow the County Clerk schedule. It took effect January 1, 2024. Noncertified paper copies run $1 per page. Certification adds $5 to that page price. Electronic copies that are not certified cost $1 per page for pages one through ten, then ten cents per page after ten. The District Clerk posts a $5 per-party search on a sheet from 2015. Ask that office for a current quote before paying.
| Service | Published amount |
|---|---|
| Plain paper copy | $1 per page |
| Certified copy | $1 per page plus $5 |
| Electronic copy | $1 first ten pages; $0.10 after |
| District search | $5 per party on older sheet; verify |
Tell the clerk whether you want plain, certified, or authenticated copies, and ask for a price quote first. A file-stamped image alone is not a certified copy.
Land Records Are Not Court Dockets
Cochran County's official-records system offers quick and advanced search tools plus document images. Even so, it indexes recorded land documents only. It is not a civil, criminal, probate, or traffic docket portal. A deed or lien can tie into a dispute yet say nothing about what happened in court. The official-records search displays that land-record interface.
Use that system for property instruments. For a lawsuit docket, probate file, judgment, or order, contact the right clerk instead.
State and Federal Docket Routes
Court level comes first. Ordinary Cochran County appeals go to the Seventh Court of Appeals in Amarillo. The Supreme Court of Texas sits at the top of the civil side. The Court of Criminal Appeals tops the criminal side. Federal matters route elsewhere entirely. They go to the Northern District of Texas, Lubbock Division, or its Lubbock bankruptcy court. Remember that PACER and CM/ECF do not search local Texas trial courts.
A case that began in the 286th Judicial District stays with the District Clerk. An appeal opens a separate appellate docket. Federal filings carry their own cause numbers and repositories. A PACER result cannot confirm a Cochran County case. The limit cuts both ways. Searching the local clerk's records will not surface a federal civil action or bankruptcy filing. Before calling any office, keep the notice, cause number, court name, and filing year together. Those details help the clerk tell a local docket request from an appellate or federal records question, and they lower the odds of searching the wrong court system.
Cochran County Court Dockets by City
Two incorporated cities have profiles drawn from official sources. Morton, the county seat, offers both courthouse and municipal routes for court records. Whiteface shows up in the 2023 official municipal directory but is absent from the 2025 list, so confirm its current status before relying on either route.

Whiteface Docket Search

A city address alone does not settle jurisdiction. Check the court named on the paperwork and the authority that issued it. County citations may land in Justice Court, while city ordinance cases usually stay municipal.
Prepare a Cochran County Docket Request
A good written request gives the clerk just enough to pull one public record. Lead with the exact court and cause number. No number? Offer a restrained name search. Add a filing year or short date range, plus the case category. Say plainly what you want. Ask for a docket sheet, register of actions, final judgment, a named order, the charging instrument, a motion, a hearing notice, or a certified copy. Asking for everything creates needless search work and may never name the item you actually need.
Separate a current court-date question from a historical file request. For a setting, cover the court, date, time, room, event type, and status. Have the clerk read each one back. Remote instructions may exist. Do not assume they do. For a file, state the format and whether it needs certification. Ask about electronic copies, mail, counter pickup, and payment. Published email and fax numbers do not guarantee every request can travel that way.
If the first office does not hold the case, ask which court level does. The phrase county court can be imprecise here. Each court level has its own door. A district matter, a constitutional county matter, a Justice Court case, and a Morton municipal citation are separate. When an online search comes up empty, do not fall back on the land index. Ask instead whether the file is older, not digitized, restricted, or excluded from remote access. If a document cannot be released, request the public docket or a redacted portion.
Write down the office, contact date, cause number, quoted fee, and delivery method. Settings can shift after a search or a phone call. Confirm close to the appearance date. A clerk can explain record procedure and issue official copies but cannot recommend legal strategy. That care gives Cochran County staff a clear request. It also leaves you a reliable trail back to the original court record.
